AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Uganda Draws South Africa, Congo, South Sudan

Uganda’s senior men’s national football team, the Uganda Cranes, have been nominated for the prestigious National Team of the Year award at the upcoming 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16, 2024.

The Cranes find themselves in elite company, with the nomination placing them among ten of Africa’s finest teams.

Alongside Uganda, reigning Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Ivory Coast, and fellow Group K opponents in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, South Africa, are in the running.

Other nominees include AFCON 2023 finalists Nigeria, Morocco, DR Congo, Sudan, Angola, Burkina Faso, and Mozambique.

This nomination comes after a strong showing by Uganda in 2024, under the leadership of Coach Paul Put.

Currently, the Cranes sit atop Group K in the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers with 10 points from four games.

This impressive run includes victories over Congo and South Sudan, both home and away.

Earlier this year, Uganda played a series of international friendlies, including a 2-0 win against Kuwait and a 2-2 draw with Ghana, although they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Comoros.

In June, the team won Botswana 1-0 but narrowly lost 2-1 to Algeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at Namboole, followed by a 2-2 draw against South Africa in Pretoria.
