A Manchester United assistant coach has found himself in hot water following a heated incident during the team’s Premier League match against Brentford last weekend.
The Football Association (FA) has charged Darren Fletcher with misconduct after his outburst directed at match officials during the halftime break.
The controversy arose after Brentford scored the opening goal while United’s Matthijs de Ligt was off the pitch receiving treatment for a head injury.
The Dutch defender was forced to leave the field due to a gushing wound, and in his absence, Brentford capitalized on the numerical advantage to take the lead.
Tensions flared in the United technical area as the home side’s coaches expressed their frustration with the referee’s decision to allow play to continue while de Ligt was off the field.
Both manager Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy received yellow cards for their reactions, while Fletcher was seen engaged in heated discussions with the match officials.
The FA’s statement regarding the incident reads, “Darren Fletcher has been charged with misconduct following Manchester United’s fixture against Brentford on Saturday, 20 October, in the Premier League. It’s alleged that the coach acted in an improper and/or confrontational manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official and the referee and/or assistant referees.”
Fletcher now has until Tuesday, October 29th, to respond to the charges.
