UPL Preview: Vipers Face Stern Test Against Mbarara City at Kakyeka

Vipers SC will face Mbarara City FC today at Kakyeka Stadium at 4pm, aiming to extend their winning streak in the Uganda Premier League and challenge for the top spot.

Currently sitting in third place with 13 points, the Venoms’ recent form under coach John Ayala Luyinda has been impressive, with three consecutive wins against SC Villa, Wakiso Giants, and Police.

Their record so far includes four wins, one draw, and one loss this season.

However, the task at hand promises to be challenging.

Mbarara City, who occupy fourth place with nine points, have built an imposing reputation at Kakyeka, where they are unbeaten in sixteen league games since last season’s opening-day loss to NEC.

Under the guidance of former Vipers head coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi, the Ankole Lions have shown consistent resilience, particularly at home.

Their attacking line, featuring the in-form Seiri Arigumaho, ex-Viper Henry Kitegenyi, and captain Joseph Akandwanaho, will look to put pressure on the visiting Venoms.

Last season’s encounter at Kakyeka ended in a goalless draw, but Vipers found redemption with a dominant 4-1 win in the reverse fixture at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, where Milton Karisa and Abubakar Lawal played key roles.

This season, the Venoms’ offensive spearhead will once again rely on Karisa, alongside Allan Okello, while former Mbarara City captain Hilary Mukundane is expected to be pivotal in Vipers’ defense as they look to secure their fourth straight victory.

Despite Vipers’ slight historical edge with five wins in their twelve encounters against Mbarara City, Kakyeeka Stadium has traditionally been a difficult venue, with only two Vipers victories and three draws out of their last six visits.

With Vipers trailing the league leaders NEC by just two points, today’s matchup could be a decisive fixture in their quest for the title.

The Venoms will look to end Mbarara City’s impressive home record and continue their push for the top spot in what promises to be a thrilling, physical encounter on a ground that adds its own unique challenges.
