Villa’s Thrilling Win Overshadowed by Tragic Passing of Assistant Referee

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has expressed profound grief following the sudden death of Ugandan referee Peter Kabugo, who collapsed during a Uganda Premier League match last Friday, and was later confirmed dead.

Kabugo was officiating SC Villa’s commanding 5-0 victory over UPDF at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, when he collapsed unexpectedly in the 70th minute, leaving players and fans alike in shock.

In an official statement from CAF, Dr. Motsepe conveyed his condolences, describing the incident as a significant loss for Ugandan football.

“CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Uganda Premier League match official, Peter Kabugo, who collapsed during a football league match at Wankulukuku Stadium in Uganda,” the statement read.

Dr. Motsepe extended his sympathies to Kabugo’s family, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), its president Moses Magogo, and the Ugandan people, adding, “May Peter Kabugo’s soul rest in eternal peace.”

The incident unfolded as SC Villa pushed forward with a counter-attack leading to their fifth goal.

Villa’s left-back, Simon Semayange, who chose not to join his teammates in celebration, was the first to reach the fallen assistant referee, signaling for urgent medical assistance.

Kabugo was swiftly transported by ambulance to Bismillah Hospital in nearby Kitebi, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

After Kabugo’s collapsing, fourth official Joshua Duula stepped in to allow the game’s remaining minutes to be played out, with Villa ultimately securing a decisive victory.

However, news of the referee’s passing soon rippled through the stadium, overshadowing the outcome of the match.

In addition to CAF’s message, FUFA also expressed deep condolences to Kabugo’s family, friends, and the Uganda Football Referees Association, pledging support to his family in this difficult time.

Both SC Villa and UPDF released statements honouring Kabugo’s dedication to Ugandan football, reflecting on his lasting impact on the game and extending sympathies to his loved ones.
