Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes, made a spirited comeback on the opening day of the Fast5 World Netball Series in New Zealand.

Competing against some of the world’s top-ranked teams, the She Cranes faced tough challenges but concluded the day with a well-deserved victory.

In their first match of the day, the She Cranes squared off against world number one Australia.

Despite showing resilience, they fell short, with Australia clinching a 44-37 win.

Uganda’s defensive circle, worked hard to counter Australia’s quick feeds into the circle, but the Diamonds’ accuracy and speed proved difficult to contain.

The second game saw Uganda facing host nation New Zealand, ranked third in the world.

The Silver Ferns made full use of their home-court advantage, taking control of the center pass and dominating through interceptions and defensive rebounds.

The She Cranes fought valiantly, with strong rotations in the midcourt and solid shooting, but ultimately lost 40-27.

However, the She Cranes turned things around in their third match of the day against world number two, England.

Uganda found their rhythm, connecting seamlessly in a more clinical display of attacking flow.

The She Cranes’ defense tightened up as well, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on intercepts to outmaneuver the Roses, securing an impressive 31-22 victory.

Ranked sixth globally, the She Cranes entered the Fast5 Series as the lowest-seeded team in the tournament.

Playing in the Fast5 Series for only the second time, the She Cranes have already shown significant growth, proving they can compete with the elite teams in netball.

On Sunday, Uganda will face South Africa and Jamaica, ranked fifth and fourth, respectively.

With renewed confidence from their win against England, the She Cranes are looking to exploit power plays effectively and capitalize on scoring chances from the long-range zones.
