Tanzania’s qualification for AFCON 2025, where they joined Uganda as the only East African representatives, is now under threat following an appeal by the Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot).
Guinea, who failed to qualify after a defeat to Tanzania, has lodged a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), citing an administrative irregularity involving a Tanzanian player.
The dispute revolves around Tanzanian player Muhamed Ibrahim Ame, whose jersey number on the official match sheet did not match the number he wore during the game.
According to Feguifoot, the player was listed as number 24 on the match sheet but played wearing number 26.
This discrepancy could lead to significant consequences under Article 47 of CAF’s regulations, which states that administrative errors in player registration can result in the suspension of the national association and disqualification of the team involved, provided the breach is confirmed.
Reports from Feguifoot indicate that CAF’s match commissioner verified the passport of a Tanzanian player wearing number 24 before the game.
It remains unclear whether the issue stemmed from a substitution or an oversight during registration.
CAF will review the appeal and make a decision with Guinea hoping for a reversal of their elimination.
If Tanzania is disqualified, it would leave Uganda as the sole East African nation at the tournament.
