FUFA President Behind Pelé’s Visit to Uganda Passes Away

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced the passing of Era Mugisa, its President from 1974 to 1976.

Mugisa’s tenure will forever be remembered as a defining era in Ugandan football, marked by his successful efforts to host football legend Pelé during his visit to Uganda in 1976.

Mugisa, a trailblazer in the sport, was also the Uganda Cranes’ coach from 1962 to 1964. His leadership was instrumental in fostering football development in the country.

Under his presidency, FUFA worked to elevate the sport’s profile, culminating in the historic visit of Pelé, the Brazilian football icon.

Pelé’s visit, organized in collaboration with Kenyan football authorities, saw him conduct a football clinic at a packed Nakivubo Stadium and engage with the national team and young talents, leaving an enduring legacy in Ugandan football.

Mugisa also served as the Head of Sports and Recreation at Makerere University and the CECAFA President. He also served as the President of the Uganda Hockey Association and Secretary General of the Uganda Athletics Federation. At the time of his death, he had just retired as the Head of the Ndejje University Sports Science department.

In its statement, FUFA lauded Mugisa’s contributions to football, describing him as a “pioneering figure” whose impact continues to inspire future generations.

“The FUFA Executive, Delegates, Members of FUFA, Secretariat staff, and the wider football community extend their heartfelt condolences to Mr. Mugisa’s family, friends, and all who were privileged to know him,” the statement read.

As the football fraternity mourns his loss, Mugisa is remembered for his vision, dedication, and the indelible mark he left on Ugandan football. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
