The 5th edition of the D Star Jinja Open Table Tennis Championships is happening this weekend with 400 players set to take part from across East Africa.
Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the tournament will witness a clash of talents, featuring both amateur and professional players vying for coveted trophies and cash prizes.
D Star Organization President, Sekyanzi Daniel Nicholas expressed excitement for the tournament.
“This tournament has witnessed consistent growth over the years, and this year’s record-breaking 400 participants, including players from China, is a testament to its rising stature,” he stated during a press briefing.
The tournament promises fierce competition, drawing players from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, setting a new benchmark for the standard of East African table tennis.
Reigning champion, Akunda Samuel, a Senior 4 student at Kibuli SS, is determined to secure a third consecutive title.
Despite acknowledging the increased competition, he remains confident.
“I’ve been training rigorously to defend my crown, even though this year’s challenge is tougher than ever,” he remarked.
This year’s edition will feature seven competitive categories, ensuring a diverse and engaging experience for all participants: Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles, Boys and Girls Under 19 (Secondary), Boys and Girls Under 13 (Primary), Mixed Doubles, and Corporate Teams.
