Uganda’s preparations for hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 have entered a critical phase as CAF Host Country Manager Serge Aussume outlined key stadium requirements during a high-level Local Organising Committee meeting in Kampala.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, brought together government officials, FUFA representatives, club officials, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
Aussume emphasized that Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) or hosting associations must secure agreements with the entities managing competition stadiums.
These agreements must stipulate that CAF takes full control of the venues at least eight days before the tournaments begin.
“It’s up to the LOC or the hosting association to enter into an agreement with the respective entities or authorities that manage the stadium, so that once they have agreed internally with those authorities, we as CAF just need you to hand us the stadium at least 8 days before the competition,” Aussume explained.
He also stressed the exclusivity of the venues during the competition period, prohibiting any matches or events once CAF assumes control.
“No matches should be played starting from the moment you give us the key to the stadium. You cannot schedule any league matches or other events there during the competition. This restriction starts 8 days before the competition and extends until three days after the final,” Aussume stated.
In addition to operational guidelines, CAF underscored the importance of pitch quality, a critical factor in meeting CAF and FIFA standards.
Aussume highlighted the role of consultants specializing in pitch management to ensure compliance at all venues, including the recently renovated Mandela National Stadium and designated training sites.
“Of course, you have seen we have been working with consultants that advise on pitch management. This is a very important aspect, and we need to ensure that all the pitches to be used, whether it is the Mandela Stadium or the respective training sites, are compliant with CAF or FIFA standards,” Aussume added.
The Ugandan government has reaffirmed its dedication to delivering successful tournaments by meeting CAF’s strict requirements.
