Express FC edged city rivals KCCA 1-0 in a tense Kampala derby under the floodlights of MTN Omondi Stadium on Saturday evening.
Captain Emmanuel Wasswa’s first-half strike was enough to secure maximum points for the Red Eagles in a tightly contested encounter.
The decisive moment came in the 30th minute when Wasswa clinically finished off a swift counterattack orchestrated by Richard Basangwa.
Basangwa’s pinpoint assist allowed the Express skipper to punish a shaky KCCA defense, who also lost this fixture last season.
Despite the host’s attempts to mount a comeback, they struggled to break down Express’ well-organised defensive line.
The Kasasiro Boys’ best opportunities came in the first half, including an early chance for Sadat Anaku, whose header went wide, and a free kick by Mustafa Mujuzi, which was saved by goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa.
KCCA made several tactical changes in the second half, introducing Haruna Lukwago, Ashraf Mugume, and others in a bid to find the equaliser.
However, the Red Eagles held firm, displaying defensive resilience and composure to secure their first clean sheet of the season and back-to-back away victories against their rivals.
The win moves Express to third place on the Uganda Premier League table, level on 19 points with KCCA but ahead due to head-to-head performance.
The Red Eagles’ resurgence is notable, with this result marking their second away win this season.
KCCA on the other hand, are now winless in four games, and drop to fourth place as their poor run of form continues.
The loss adds pressure on the team as they look to rediscover their early-season form.
Both teams return to action next week for Matchday 12.
Express will host URA at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo on December 13, aiming to build on this momentum, while KCCA will visit Wakiso Giants on December 15, seeking to end their winless streak.
