The 3rd edition of the CAF African Schools Football Championship – CECAFA Zone is set to kick off on Tuesday December 10th at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende, attracting nine U-15 teams from across the region.
Uganda will be represented by defending champions St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende in the boys’ category and St Noa Girls’ School in the girls’ division.
The five-day tournament will feature a league format, with the teams vying for the coveted title and a substantial cash prize.
In addition to the competitive matches, CAF has organized several workshops to run concurrently with the tournament, including a Coaching Programme, Young Referees Programme, Young Reporters Programme, and Safeguarding initiatives.
These programs aim to enhance football development within the region beyond the competitive aspect.
The winning teams will then represent the CECAFA Zone at the CAF African Schools Football Championship Finals scheduled for next year at a venue to be announced later.
Supported by the Motsepe Foundation in partnership with CAF, African Governments, Member Associations, and Schools, the championship offers significant rewards.
Winners in both the boys’ and girls’ categories will receive a prize money of USD 300,000 each, while runners-up will receive USD 200,000, and bronze medalists will take home USD 150,000.
These funds are to be utilized for development projects within the winning schools.
Last year, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim secured third place in the boys’ category, winning a cash prize of USD 150,000.
South Africa emerged victorious in the girls’ category, defeating Tanzania, while Morocco claimed the boys’ gold after beating Guinea.
