Uganda Cranes Edge Burundi in First Leg of CHAN Qualifier

The Uganda Cranes secured a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Burundi in the first leg of their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifier at Hamz Stadium in Nakibubo on Thursday.

In a fiercely contested encounter, striker Isaac Ogwang’s 35th-minute goal proved to be the difference-maker, giving the home side a slight advantage heading into the second leg.

The Cranes started the game with intent, creating several early opportunities. Jude Ssemugabi came close in the 11th minute with a lofted effort that sailed narrowly wide, and five minutes later, he rounded the goalkeeper but was denied by a last-ditch clearance from Olivier Dushime.

Shafik Nana Kwikiriza also had a chance to open the scoring, but his header sailed over the bar.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 35th minute. Burundi midfielder Gloire Tambwe misplayed a pass, and Ogwang pounced, firing a low shot into the bottom corner to give Uganda the lead.

Burundi increased the pressure after halftime, creating several promising chances, but the Ugandan defense held firm to preserve their slender advantage.

The two teams will now face off in the decisive second leg on Sunday at the same venue.

Uganda, along with Tanzania and Kenya, has already qualified as a host nation for the 2024 CHAN tournament.

However, Burundi is still vying for a place in the final qualifying round.
