Uganda Cranes head coach, Paul Put, is set to unveil the squad that will represent Uganda at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled to run from February 1 to 28, 2025.
The announcement will be made tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the FUFA Complex in Mengo.
The Cranes are expected to feature a squad similar to the 26 players summoned for the ceremonial CHAN qualifiers against Burundi in late December.
Uganda Cranes secured a double over Burundi with identical 1-0 wins in both legs played at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Isaac Ogwang’s decisive goal in the first leg set the tone, while Hakim Kiwanuka’s strike in the return fixture sealed a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Paul Put’s expected squad could include standout performers such as Vipers’ Allan Okello, currently the Uganda Premier League’s top scorer with 11 goals.
Striker Ivan Ahimbisibwe, Gavin Kizito, Jude Ssemugabi, Patrick Jonah Kakande, and goalkeeper Joel Mutakubuwa are also expected to be included.
However, the availability of Vipers forward Milton Karisa remains uncertain.
Karisa sustained an injury during Vipers’ narrow 1-0 win over Maroons on Monday, forcing his substitution in the 30th minute.
The severity of his injury will determine his inclusion in the final team.
CHAN, Africa’s second-largest football competition, exclusively features players who compete in their respective domestic leagues.
Uganda will co-host the 18-team tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, with matches spread across the three East African nations.
Defending champions Senegal, record titleholders DR Congo, and Morocco are among the teams that will headline the tournament.
The CHAN tournament’s group stage draw will also take place tomorrow at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya.
