In a bid to revive the fortunes of their struggling club, passionate fans of Onduparaka have launched a fundraising campaign to purchase a much-needed minibus.
The “Caterpillars,” once a symbol of hope and a fan favorite in Ugandan football, are currently grappling with severe financial constraints.
Relegated from the Uganda Premier League two seasons ago, Onduparaka is now battling to regain its former glory in the FUFA Big League.
However, financial woes are hindering their progress. Players have reportedly gone months without pay, and the club is struggling to fulfill its fixture obligations, particularly those involving long-distance travel.
Recognizing the critical need for support, the fans have initiated a fundraising drive with an ambitious target of Shs250 million.
The funds will be used to acquire a minibus, a crucial asset for a club that frequently faces transportation challenges.
“The club’s financial situation is dire,” stated Ceasor Buti Galdihho, chairman of the fundraising committee. “The founders can no longer shoulder the burden alone. We, the fans, must step in to prevent the loss of this beloved club, just as we’ve seen happen to other West Nile clubs.”
Galdihho emphasized the importance of restoring the club to the Premier League and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
“Transport is our biggest obstacle,” he told the press on Monday. “We need to acquire a minibus to ensure we can fulfill our fixtures and ultimately secure our return to the top flight.”
Onduparaka’s debut season in the top tier (2016/17) was a period of unprecedented excitement in Ugandan football.
The club garnered a massive following, known for its passionate and dedicated fan base. The Greenlight Stadium became a fortress, and the Caterpillars stunned giants like SC Villa, KCCA, and Vipers with their impressive home form.
The fans have consistently been among the most passionate and vocal supporters in Ugandan football, creating an electric atmosphere at matches and unwavering loyalty to their club.
