Rwandan Giants APR Secure Denis Omedi’s Signature

Uganda Cranes forward Denis Omedi has officially joined Rwandan football heavyweights APR FC.

The prolific striker, who previously played for Kitara, made the switch alongside former SC Villa winger Hakim Kiwanuka, in a double swoop by the reigning Rwanda Premier League champions.

The duo’s transfer was confirmed by APR on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “Join us in welcoming to APR FC Denis Omedi and Hakim Kiwanuka. Welcome aboard.”

Both players were spotted earlier today, January 8, 2025, in Gisenyi City at Umuganda Stadium, where they watched APR secure a 2-1 victory over Marines.

Omedi’s move comes at a high point in his career, as he continues to impress on both the domestic and international stages.

His journey with Kitara saw him score 15 goals in the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League season, claim the Player of the Month award in February 2024, and play a decisive role in Kitara’s Stanbic Uganda Cup triumph last year.

The striker also gained international acclaim in 2024 when his remarkable rabona goal against KCCA in the FUFA Super 8 earned him nominations for the FIFA Puskás Award and the CAF Goal of the Year.

His consistent performances further bolstered Uganda’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Omedi contributing two crucial goals during the campaign.

As a result, he sparked interest from numerous teams, including local giants Vipers, Brunei DPMM, and clubs from Spain, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, and Libya, but APR have ultimately secured his signature.

Winger Hakim Kiwanuka joins APR from SC Villa, bringing creativity and versatility to the squad.

His addition is expected to complement Omedi’s goal-scoring abilities as the team looks to close the gap on league leaders Rayon Sport.

APR, known for their dominance in Rwandan football, are currently second in the Rwanda Premier League standings with 31 points from 14 matches, five points behind Rayon Sport.

With 22 league titles, 13 Rwandan Cups, and three Kagame Interclub Cups, the club has a history of success that both Omedi and Kiwanuka will aim to build upon.

The team also participated in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, where they were knocked out by Egypt’s Pyramids 4-2 on aggregate in the preliminary round.

Both players are expected to make their debuts on Sunday, January 12, when APR faces ninth-placed Amagaju.

With these reinforcements, APR’s pursuit of yet another league title and continental glory looks promising.
