World Cup Preview: Brazil Face Stern Test Against Giant-Killers Morocco

Brazil begin their quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup crown with one of the tournament’s most intriguing opening fixtures as they take on Morocco in a heavyweight Group C showdown in New Jersey, set for Sunday morning at 1 am.

The five-time champions arrive as one of the leading contenders for global glory, but standing in their way are a Morocco side that has rewritten African football history and proven that their extraordinary run to the semi-finals in Qatar was no one-off achievement.

Brazil Seeking a Dream Start

Brazil head into their World Cup opener in confident mood after recording three consecutive friendly victories, scoring 11 goals in the process.

The attacking firepower of the Selecao remains one of their biggest strengths, with a squad packed with individual brilliance and capable of overwhelming opponents on their day.

The North American stage also brings back positive memories for Brazil, who lifted their fourth World Cup title the last time the tournament was hosted in the United States in 1994.

However, their recent World Cup record has fallen below their exceptionally high standards, with just one quarter-final appearance since their last triumph in 2002.

Despite those disappointments, Brazil’s tournament pedigree remains unmatched. No nation has played more World Cup matches (114) or recorded more victories (76), and they will be expected to show why they are among the favourites from the opening whistle.

The Selecao’s biggest challenge will be breaking down a disciplined Moroccan defence that has developed a reputation for frustrating the world’s best teams.

Morocco Ready for Another Historic Chapter

Morocco may not boast Brazil’s legendary World Cup history, but their rise over the past few years has been remarkable.

The Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, defeating several established European powers along the way before eventually finishing fourth.

Far from being a one-tournament wonder, Morocco have continued their progress. They qualified for this World Cup with a perfect record of eight wins from eight matches, later claiming the Arab Cup title and reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Since securing that continental success, Mohamed Ouahbi’s side have remained unbeaten in five friendly matches, winning three and drawing two, including a 1-1 draw with Norway.

That form has given Morocco belief that they can compete with even the most decorated teams in world football.

However, history is against them in one area: Morocco have never won their opening World Cup match, recording three draws and three defeats across their previous six appearances.

History Favours Brazil, But Morocco Have Recent Success

Brazil have dominated the historical meetings between the two nations, winning two of their three previous encounters. Their first World Cup meeting came in 1998, when Brazil defeated Morocco in the group stage.

However, Morocco claimed the most recent victory, earning a memorable 2-1 friendly win over the Selecao in 2023, a result that demonstrated their growing confidence against elite opposition.

Key Battles and Players to Watch

Brazil will look to Vinicius Junior to provide the attacking spark. The Real Madrid star has contributed three goals in his last three appearances for club and country, scoring twice and assisting once, while two of his last three international goals have opened the scoring.

Besides Vini, Brazil boast also a star-studded squad that features the likes of Raphinha, Paqueta, Bruno Guimaraes, Casemiro, Gabriel Magalhaes and goalkeeper Alisson.

Morocco will also have a dangerous creative presence in Brahim Diaz, who has been directly involved in three goals across his last five appearances, including opening the scoring against Norway.

Alongside Diaz, Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat and goalkeeper Yassine Bono, who were superb in 2022, are expected to put up a tough fight.

Brazil could receive a major boost with Neymar reportedly making progress in his recovery from a calf injury and pushing for availability.

Morocco, meanwhile, have suffered setbacks, with Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli returning home injured, while Noussair Mazraoui remains doubtful after picking up an injury against Norway.

Numbers That Matter

  • Brazil are unbeaten in their last 20 World Cup opening matches, winning 17 and drawing three.
  • Brazil’s last four matches have produced an average of 1.5 goals after the 75th minute.
  • Morocco have kept a first-half clean sheet in each of their last 24 matches.
  • Morocco have never won their first game at a World Cup.
