MTN Uganda has announced its renewed partnership with the Busoga Kingdom to launch the 2nd Edition of the MTN Busoga Cycling Championship.
This year’s championship, scheduled to begin on January 18th, 2025, carries a significant social message alongside the sporting competition.
The championship is themed “Abasaadha Ne’Mpango” which translates to “Men Are the Pillars” in English.
This theme aligns with the Busoga Kingdom’s “Abasaadha Ne’mpango” campaign, urging men and boys to take a more prominent role in family and community issues, particularly in the fight against teenage pregnancy.
The success of prior programs, such as the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup, has solidified the positive influence that sports can have on fostering unity, cultivating talent, and driving social progress within the Busoga Kingdom.
John Paul Okwi, Manager Sponsorships & Events at MTN Uganda, expressed the company’s honor in partnering with the Busoga Kingdom on this crucial initiative.
He highlighted that the MTN Busoga Cycling Championship not only promotes sportsmanship and healthy competition but also tackles critical social challenges. MTN Uganda believes in empowering communities and creating a lasting impact through such programs.
The launch ceremony for the championship was held at the Bugembe Kingdom Headquarters, presided over by His Royal Highness William Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV.
The championship will feature two racing categories: Mountain Bikes and Tipper Bikes. These races will be held at both the chiefdom and kingdom levels.
The chiefdom qualifiers will take place from January 18 to February 14, 2025, leading up to the grand finals on February 15, 2025.
Winners of the grand finals can expect exciting prizes, including motorcycles for first place, cash rewards of up to UGX 4 million, and participation bonuses for all finishers.
Owek Babirye Yudaya Kigenyi, Minister for Kyabazinga Affairs, emphasized the Busoga Kingdom’s pride in collaborating with MTN Uganda on this significant effort.
The theme, “Men Are the Pillars,” underscores the essential role men and boys play in strengthening families and safeguarding the future of young girls in the fight against teenage pregnancy. Minister Kigenyi urged the community to come together and champion this cause.
