Baker Mbowa’s reign as head coach of Mbale Heroes has gotten off to a disappointing start.
In his first competitive match in charge, the former Uganda Cranes international watched his side succumb to a 3-2 defeat against third-tier Simba FC in the Round of 64 of the 51st Stanbic Uganda Cup.
Despite a marked improvement in performance compared to previous outings, Mbale Heroes were unable to hold on to their lead, ultimately succumbing to the spirited challenge of their lower-league opponents at the Namulonge playground.
Edgar Katumba provided a glimmer of hope for Mbowa, netting a brace for the 1999 Uganda Cup champions.
The forward opened the scoring in the 28th minute, only for Simba’s Patrick Oyet to equalize shortly before halftime.
Katumba restored Heroes’ lead early in the second half, but defensive lapses allowed Umar Kayemba and Kenneth Ssebaduka to find the back of the net, sending the Buganda Regional League side through to the next round.
Reflecting on the defeat, Mbowa acknowledged his team’s progress but lamented their inability to maintain composure during crucial moments.
“The boys showed fight and determination, but we need to close games better,” he said. “It’s disappointing, but we’ll take the positives and build from here.”
Simba’s victory serves as a testament to the growing competitiveness of regional clubs in the Uganda Cup. They join third-division sides CATDA FC and Pakwach Young Stars in advancing to the Round of 32.
