Kyle Walker’s anticipated move to AC Milan has hit a temporary snag due to post-Brexit regulations.
The English defender, who signed a loan deal with the Italian giants from Manchester City on Thursday, will be unable to play for his new club until next month.
Walker, who arrived in Milan on Thursday and underwent a medical, faces a bureaucratic hurdle.
Following Britain’s departure from the European Union, non-EU nationals require a work permit to stay in Italy for more than 90 days.
This necessary paperwork will prevent Walker from featuring in the immediate future.
Despite this setback, Walker is expected to be a valuable addition to the AC Milan squad.
He will initially join on a £4.2 million loan with an option for a permanent move until 2027.
Italian media reported that a “last-minute” bid from Saudi Arabia nearly derailed the deal, highlighting the strong competition for Walker’s signature.
Walker received a warm welcome from AC Milan fans upon his arrival, but his move wasn’t met with universal approval in Italy.
Some critics questioned the need for the 34-year-old defender, citing his age and perceived defensive shortcomings.
Walker joins a distinguished list of English players who have graced the San Siro, including Jimmy Greaves, Ray Wilkins, Mark Hateley, Luther Blissett, David Beckham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abraham, and Fikayo Tomori.
Walker is expected to miss Milan’s upcoming matches against Parma and Dinamo Zagreb. He will likely make his debut in early February against city rivals Inter Milan once all the necessary paperwork is finalized.
