AFCON 2025: Cranes Vice-Captain Watenga Reacts to Group C Challenge

Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Isima Watenga has expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the upcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, despite acknowledging the challenges posed by their Group C opponents—Nigeria, Tunisia, and Tanzania.

Speaking about the group, Watenga admitted, “It is a tough group,” but quickly emphasized Uganda’s resilience and hard work during the qualifiers as a strong foundation for success.

“However, with the dedication and hard work we put up in the qualifiers, I believe we are ready to face any team on the continent so that we raise our flag so high,” he stated.

Watenga was pivotal in Uganda’s AFCON 2025 qualification campaign, serving as the first-choice goalkeeper throughout.

His commanding presence between the posts and ability to organize the defense earned him a key leadership role within the squad.

As one of the team’s vice-captains, Watenga also provides crucial guidance on and off the field, deputizing for captain Khalid Aucho when needed.

The Cranes will rely heavily on Watenga’s experience and leadership as they navigate a challenging group.

Uganda opens their campaign against Tunisia on December 23, followed by an East African derby against Tanzania on December 27, before wrapping up the group stage against three-time champions Nigeria on December 30.

The Cranes are determined to build on their successful qualification campaign and make a mark in Morocco.
