Nigeria’s legendary former captain Joseph Yobo has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ prospects of securing a fourth TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, following the tournament draw that placed them in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Yobo, who captained Nigeria to their last AFCON triumph in 2013, acknowledged the competitive nature of the group but backed the Super Eagles to progress.
Reflecting on the Super Eagles’ approach to the tournament, Yobo expressed confidence in the squad and their preparation.
“We have a good mix of young and experienced players, and the understanding within the team is strong. It’s about starting well, taking the momentum forward, and focusing on the ultimate prize,” he said.
Nigeria’s AFCON history speaks volumes, with 16 medals from 20 appearances, including three titles (1980, 1994, and 2013).
Yobo emphasized the importance of carrying lessons from their runner-up finish in 2023 into the upcoming tournament.
“We came close last time but fell short. Now, with a fantastic coach and an improving squad, we have what it takes to go all the way,” Yobo added.
Uganda, making their eighth AFCON appearance, have steadily climbed the ranks of African football and are considered a team capable of upsetting more established sides.
Uganda previously reached the AFCON Round of 16 in 2019 and will look to build on that momentum.
Uganda’s East African neighbors, Tanzania, round out the group and will be seeking to capitalize on their familiarity with Uganda in what promises to be a fiercely contested derby.
Meanwhile, Tunisia, one of Africa’s football powerhouses, remain a formidable challenge, having defeated Nigeria in the 2021 Round of 16.
AFCON 2025 is set to kick off in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
