The iconic FIFA Club World Cup trophy has touched down on African soil, igniting anticipation for the upcoming tournament set to take place in the United States from June 14th to July 13th, 2025.
The trophy’s arrival marks the beginning of a tour across the continent, celebrating the participation of four powerhouse African clubs.
Thirty-two teams will compete in this expanded edition of the global club competition, including four representatives from Africa: Al Ahly SC (Egypt), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), and Wydad AC (Morocco).
The trophy’s African journey began in South Africa on Thursday, February 6th, with a visit to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Club Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, along with the team’s technical staff and players, warmly welcomed the trophy.
Motsepe highlighted the inspirational power of the trophy, emphasizing its ability to motivate aspiring footballers across the continent.
“There is a saying in isiZulu that goes, ‘one hand washes the other.’ Just as this trophy is going to inspire many South Africans and Africans through the prestige that it has and the incredible people that have had it in the past, we also will ensure that as it moves with the spirit of Africa,” Motsepe stated.
This marks Mamelodi Sundowns’ second appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup, following their debut in Japan.
They face a challenging Group F, which includes German giants Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian side Fluminense FC, and Ulsan HD of Korea.
The trophy tour continues, with its next stop in Cairo, Egypt, where it will be showcased on Monday. From there, it will travel to Tunisia and Morocco, where it will be greeted by Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Wydad AC, respectively.
These visits will provide fans with an opportunity to connect with the prestigious trophy and build excitement for the upcoming tournament.
