A pulsating Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu ended in a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday, with Kylian Mbappe’s crucial second-half equalizer rescuing a point for Real Madrid against a resilient Atletico Madrid.

The match was filled with drama, controversy, and moments of brilliance, leaving both teams with a share of the spoils.

Atletico Madrid took the lead in the first half through a controversial penalty converted by Julian Alvarez.

The spot-kick was awarded after Aurelien Tchouameni, filling in at center-back for Real Madrid, was adjudged to have fouled Samuel Lino in the box.

The decision sparked outrage from the Real Madrid players and fans, who felt the challenge was outside the immediate play.

Adding fuel to the fire, Real Madrid had already expressed concerns about the standard of refereeing in La Liga following a recent defeat. Alvarez coolly dispatched the penalty with a Panenka, sending the ball down the middle as the goalkeeper dived.

“I can’t say I wasn’t a bit nervous (with the penalty), but I was sure, I knew what I would do, and it was a great goal for the team,” Alvarez commented after the match.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, visibly frustrated by the decision, refrained from directly criticizing the refereeing but acknowledged the team’s disappointment.

“The team is disappointed because they think they deserved more… but we’re happy because we’re still leaders,” Ancelotti stated. He praised his team’s second-half performance, adding, “In the second half, we had total control, we had a lot of chances.”

Despite the setback, Real Madrid came out with renewed vigor in the second half.

Their attacking quartet of Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo Goes began to exert more influence on the game.

The breakthrough came early in the second period when Rodrygo’s cross found Bellingham, whose initial shot was blocked.

Mbappe was alert to the rebound, calmly slotting the ball home for his first goal in a Madrid derby.

Bellingham himself came close to giving Real Madrid the lead, twice heading narrowly wide.

Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was also called into action, making crucial saves to deny Vinicius, Rodrygo, and Mbappe. Oblak’s heroics ensured that Atletico Madrid secured a hard-earned point.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone acknowledged the intense nature of the match.

“We had a good first half, but we weren’t relaxed enough in front of goal to (score) more,” Simeone said. “In the end, it was a draw in which both teams think they could have taken more from it.”

The draw keeps Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table, albeit by a slim margin. They now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they face a daunting challenge against Manchester City in the play-off round first leg on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Athletic Bilbao continued their impressive form with a 3-0 victory over Girona, thanks to an Oihan Sancet hat-trick.

Antony, on loan from Manchester United, scored his first goal for Real Betis, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat against Celta Vigo.
