Manchester United academy prospect Godwill Kukonki has been approached by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to represent their national team.
If he accepts, he would become the second United player to play for DRC, following Axel Tuanzebe, who now plays for Ipswich Town.
The Manchester Evening News reports that the 17-year-old centre-back, who was born in England, has impressed United’s new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese coach reportedly assessed academy prospects in his first training session last November, and Kukonki was the only youngster who stood out.
Kukonki has already been included in multiple matchday squads this season, highlighting the club’s faith in his potential.
He has yet to make his senior debut, but with Lisandro Martínez sidelined due to injury, his chances of stepping up have increased.
Given United’s shortage of left-footed defenders, he could become a key option at left centre-back.
Despite being eligible for England, the approach from DRC could put pressure on the Three Lions to act fast.
If Amorim hands him his first-team debut soon, his case for international selection will only grow stronger.
Kukonki’s rapid progress at United’s academy suggests he has a bright future ahead, whether in club football or on the international stage.
