UPL Preview: KCCA on the Brink as Vipers Look to Tighten Grip on Title Race

The Uganda Premier League enters a defining phase as KCCA FC host table-toppers Vipers SC in a high-stakes showdown at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Sunday night.

For the Kasasiro Boys, this could be their last chance to keep their fading title hopes alive, while for Vipers, it’s an opportunity to pull further clear in the race for a seventh league crown.

Abdallah Mubiru’s KCCA have endured a turbulent spell, with Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to NEC FC adding to the growing frustration among fans.

The loss left them stranded in fifth place, 13 points behind their Sunday opponents. Anything short of victory would all but confirm their exit from the title conversation.

Making matters worse, KCCA’s task is made even tougher by an injury crisis that rules out several key players, including captain Julius Poloto, Usama Arafat, Peter Magambo, Steven Munguchi, and Emmanuel Anyama.

On the bright side, however, right-back Gavin Kizito returns after serving a one-match suspension in the NEC defeat.

Vipers, on the other hand, arrive in Lugogo brimming with confidence after dispatching URA 2-0 on Tuesday.

They remain unbeaten since John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda took charge and boast of the best goal difference in the league (+21)

Their biggest weapon is none other than former KCCA playmaker Allan Okello, who has been in scintillating form with 12 goals this season.

His presence will be a painful reminder of what KCCA lost when they let him leave for free.

The Venoms also welcome back left-back Derrick Ndahiro from suspension, but they will be without centre-back Rogers Torach, who is serving a one-match ban for accumulating three yellow cards.

In the reverse fixture at Kitende, Ashraf Mugume’s late equaliser salvaged a 1-1 draw for KCCA, but that was a different time.

Now, the Venoms are a well-oiled winning machine, while KCCA are a team in disarray.

Mubiru, who is under immense pressure, knows his side must be ruthless in front of goal if they are to stand a chance.

“We lacked efficiency in the final third against NEC. That is what we need to improve on,” he admitted.

If KCCA fail to deliver, the Venoms could deliver the final blow to their season. Will KCCA defy the odds and fight for their survival, or will Vipers tighten their grip on the crown?

Lugogo awaits the answer. Kickoff is 7pm.
