Mamelodi Sundowns may be dominating the DStv Premiership standings, but their growing disciplinary record is becoming a concern.
The Brazilians lead the league with 45 points from 17 matches, yet they have also accumulated the most red cards this season—nine in total—raising questions about their aggressive approach on the field.
The latest incident saw veteran goalkeeper and former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango sent off deep into stoppage time during Sundowns’ 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.
Onyango’s red card was his second of the season, further highlighting the club’s struggles with maintaining discipline in high-pressure situations.
Coach Miguel Cardoso expressed his frustration over the increasing number of red cards, suggesting that Sundowns are being unfairly targeted.
“The way the game finished wasn’t ideal, and we need to address the issue. The cards are coming too easily against us,” Cardoso said. “It’s happening too often, and we’re seeing situations where teams use game management tactics against us.”
Sundowns have now surpassed their red card tally from last season, where they received six dismissals across the entire campaign.
The current figure of nine, with 13 league games still to play, suggests that this number could rise even further.
Key players such as Tashreeq Matthews, Bathusi Aubaas, and Aubrey Modiba have all been sent off, adding to the team’s woes.
Despite their disciplinary struggles, Sundowns remain the dominant force in the PSL, showcasing their attacking prowess and tactical superiority.
However, Cardoso and his technical team will need to address their growing red card problem to avoid potential setbacks as they push for the league title and continental success.
With crucial fixtures ahead, including CAF Champions League commitments, the Brazilians must strike a balance between their aggressive style of play and maintaining discipline on the pitch.
