Rwenzori Lions FC, a football club based in Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council, Kasese District, has become a symbol of resilience and ambition in Western Uganda.
Founded in 2006, the club has grown from humble beginnings into a competitive force in the Kitara region, driven by an unwavering passion for football and a relentless pursuit of success.
The club’s story began with a group of young butchers from Mpondwe Rufura, who sought to make productive use of their free time after work.
Their shared love for football led them to form a team, initially named Rufura FC, with support from the Butcher Men Association of Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council.
In its early years, Rufura FC participated in local tournaments, quickly making a name for itself. The team won the Hon. Winnie Kiiza Football Tournament in both 2006-2007 and 2008-2009, as well as the Sajoca Cup in 2012-2013, solidifying its reputation as a rising football powerhouse.
The club’s journey through the ranks of Ugandan football has been marked by steady progress. In 2017, it officially joined the 5th Division and earned promotion to the 4th Division a year later under the name Rufura Pro-Line FC. By 2019, the club had advanced to the 3rd Division, where it rebranded as Rwenzori Lions FC.
A defining moment came in 2020 when the team played in its first Big League playoff at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru against Boma FC. Though they fell short of promotion, the experience only strengthened their resolve.
For the past four years, Rwenzori Lions FC has dominated the Edward Group in the Kitara region, consistently qualifying for playoffs. While promotion has remained elusive, the team has earned respect within Ugandan football circles for its tenacity and competitive spirit.
Looking ahead, the club’s primary objective is to secure promotion to the FUFA Big League. To achieve this, Rwenzori Lions FC is focusing on improving its squad, enhancing training programs, and nurturing young talent in Kasese District. The club is also actively seeking sponsorships and partnerships to support its continued growth and development.
A recent milestone further showcased their potential as they reached the Round of 16 in the Uganda Cup after edging out Buhimba Saints United FC in a thrilling penalty shootout (5-4) in the Round of 32.
With the unwavering support of the community and a clear vision for the future, Rwenzori Lions FC remains steadfast in its quest to make a lasting impact on Ugandan football.
