The tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal has now sparked a full investigation, with the Nigerian government stepping in to ensure justice is served.

The 29-year-old Vipers forward tragically passed away on Monday under unclear circumstances, prompting a public outcry and a plea from Super Eagles’ captain, Ahmed Musa.

Initially, reports indicated that Lawal had died in a fatal accident on Entebbe Road, but later statements from the Ugandan police suggested a different scenario, claiming that the footballer fell from the third floor of a hotel at the Voicemail Shopping Mall in Bwebajja.

This discrepancy between the reports has raised questions about the true cause of his death.

According to police, Lawal had been at the mall to visit his friend, Naima Omary, a Tanzanian national who had been residing in the hotel since January 21, 2025.

However, in a twist, Omary reportedly moved out of the hotel to Game Center in the same mall before the incident occurred.

These conflicting details have added fuel to suspicions, with the public demanding transparency.

Super Eagles’ captain Ahmed Musa, deeply moved by the loss, called for a thorough investigation by both Nigerian and Ugandan authorities.

He urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigerian government to ensure a full probe into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.

In response to Musa’s call, the Nigerian government, through the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda, has decided to take action.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed concern over the conflicting reports, describing the situation as “suspicious” and “pathetic.”

“This is so sad and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all,” Dabiri-Erewa stated in her remarks, as quoted by Swift Sports.

“The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul rest in peace, and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”

Abubakar Lawal, who joined Vipers SC from AS Kigali in 2022, will forever be remembered in the club’s history.

During their maiden CAF Champions League campaign in 2023, he scored the only goal for Vipers in their match against Raja Casablanca, securing his place as a beloved figure in Ugandan football.

As the investigation continues, the calls for justice grow louder. Lawal’s tragic and untimely passing serves as a reminder of the need for truth and accountability in the face of suspicious circumstances.

May his memory live on, and may his family find the strength to endure this painful loss.
