FUFA President Moses Magogo has called for the installation of floodlights at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, to facilitate night matches in the Uganda Premier League (UPL).
Wankulukuku is among the stadiums being renovated as Uganda gears up to co-host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The ongoing works at the venue present an opportunity to enhance its infrastructure, and Magogo believes that adding floodlights would leave a lasting legacy for Ugandan football.
“We are asking that if we could get the floodlights there as well, so that it is also used at night for CHAN,” Magogo said.
“For us as football, we’d be happy because, at the end of the day, it is a UPL venue. These are some of the benefits as a country, because having Wankulukuku hosting night football leaves a good legacy out of these competitions we’re hosting.”
If floodlights are installed, Wankulukuku would become the fourth UPL stadium capable of hosting night games, joining St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo and Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Magogo revealed that discussions are ongoing with the government to make this a reality. “We are discussing with the government, and we feel that if we pull this off, for me, it’ll be a great achievement,” he stated.
Wankulukuku, the home ground of UPL defending champions SC Villa, is among the designated CHAN training venues, alongside Kyambogo University Stadium, FUFA Stadium in Kadiba, and the training pitch at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
While Namboole and Kadiba are nearly ready, Magogo admitted that more work is still required at Kyambogo and Wankulukuku.
“We still have work to do in Kyambogo, but we are within time. At Kadiba, there is a lot of work that has been done, and we’re almost there,” he noted.
“For Wankulukuku, we have a little bit of things to do, we accept, but we’re working hard to make sure that we also have that venue ready.” Magogo added.
