Okwi, 32, made his debut for the national team on March 7, 2009, under coach Bobby Williamson. Over the years, he became a mainstay in the Cranes’ attack, excelling across the frontline as a left winger, right winger, center forward, or second striker, depending on the team’s tactical setup.

In his 95 appearances for Uganda, Okwi scored an impressive 28 goals, cementing his legacy as one of the nation’s most prolific players.

Appointed captain of the Uganda Cranes in 2021, Okwi succeeded veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango in leading the team through a transitional phase.

Reflecting on his time with the national side, Okwi shared, “Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour.”

In his heartfelt retirement statement, Okwi highlighted the future of Ugandan football, noting the exciting opportunities ahead.

With East Africa set to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) later this year and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, he expressed confidence in the new generation of young footballers poised to take Ugandan football to greater heights.

“Having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players,” Okwi said.

“I will always hold close to my heart the love shown to me by all the fans and my special thanks go to my family, Coach Bobby Williamson, all the successive coaches thereafter, and the leadership at FUFA.”

Emmanuel Okwi leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and passion for the game. As Uganda gears up for an exciting new era in football, the nation will undoubtedly remember Okwi’s immense contributions and the moments of brilliance he brought to the Uganda Cranes.
