In a fiercely contested Group H clash, Namibia and Equatorial Guinea shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium on Monday, March 24, 2025, during Matchday 6 of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Brave Warriors, riding high after a recent victory over Malawi, aimed to close the gap on group leaders Tunisia.
Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea, fresh from a 2-0 triumph over São Tomé and Príncipe, sought to continue their winning momentum.
Despite the pre-match optimism, the first half failed to ignite, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm.
Namibia held the edge in terms of chances created, but a combination of resolute defending from Equatorial Guinea and a lack of clinical finishing kept the scoreline at 0-0 heading into the interval.
The second half, however, painted a drastically different picture, bursting into life within minutes of the restart.
Namibia broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, courtesy of a brilliantly executed set-piece. Deon Hotto delivered a pinpoint free-kick, which found Peter Shalulile unmarked at the edge of the six-yard box. Shalulile made no mistake, volleying home to give Namibia a crucial lead.
Equatorial Guinea’s response was swift and decisive. Just three minutes later, in the 54th minute, defender Saúl Coco equalized, firing home after a well-placed pass from Esteban Orozco. The goal reflected Nzalang Nacional’s growing influence in midfield, showcasing their ability to penetrate Namibia’s defense.
The remainder of the match saw both sides push for a decisive goal, but neither could find the breakthrough. Despite their efforts, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result leaves Namibia in second place in Group H with 12 points, three points behind leaders Tunisia. Equatorial Guinea sit in fourth position with seven points, facing an uphill battle to qualify.
For Namibia, the draw maintains their position within striking distance of qualification, while Equatorial Guinea now face the daunting task of winning their remaining matches to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
