Former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth, renowned for his extensive experience in English football, is currently in discussions with the Football Association (FA) about a possible return to a senior role.
Ashworth, who previously served as the FA’s director of elite development from 2012 to 2018, could oversee both men’s and women’s technical operations, alongside the continued refurbishment of St George’s Park—home to all England teams.
Ashworth’s most recent tenure at Manchester United ended in December, following just five months in his position, costing the club £4.1m in hiring and firing fees.
During his time at United, the club faced challenges, including struggles in the Premier League and the departure of manager Erik ten Hag. Ashworth’s hiring by United was later labeled “an error” by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The FA has yet to comment on the potential appointment, while its current technical director, John McDermott, is expected to retain his position.
Despite recent setbacks, Ashworth’s career includes noteworthy achievements, such as the development of England’s elite teams during his previous stint at the FA.
Under his watch, Gareth Southgate guided England’s men’s team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, and the women’s team reached the same stage at the 2015 tournament.
Additionally, Ashworth has been involved in a voluntary advisory role with Warwickshire County Cricket Club, showcasing his diverse contributions to sports management.
