Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has revealed that Major League Soccer (MLS) has banned him from entering the pitch during games, limiting his ability to assist the Inter Miami superstar directly.
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, has been a critical part of Messi’s security detail since the Argentine icon’s move to the United States in 2023.
Cheuko has been a familiar presence at Inter Miami fixtures, frequently intercepting pitch invaders determined to get close to the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
However, MLS has now confined his role to off-field responsibilities, a decision Cheuko acknowledges but feels could impact security measures.
“I understand their decision, but I think we could do better,” Cheuko shared with House of Highlights. Comparing his experiences in Europe to the United States, he added, “In seven years in Europe, only six pitch invasions happened. Since coming to the U.S., I’ve dealt with 16 in 20 months. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem—let me help Messi.”
Despite the restrictions, Cheuko remains a trusted figure in Messi’s inner circle.
Beyond providing physical protection, Cheuko emphasized his psychological support role, stating, “I feel like I’m part of his family, and I work hard to protect him. He depends on me and trusts me.”
Messi, who returned to action for Inter Miami in their latest 2-1 victory over Philadelphia Union, will be looking ahead to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final clash with LAFC on April 3.
