Bayern Munich missed the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to eight points as Borussia Dortmund held them to a pulsating 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
In a tale of two halves, Bayern dominated early proceedings but failed to break through Dortmund’s resilient defense, only to fall behind as Maximilian Beier capitalized on a lapse in concentration, heading the ball through Jonas Urbig’s legs with Dortmund’s first shot on target.
The hosts’ struggles persisted as Waldemar Anton narrowly avoided scoring an own goal when his clearance struck the underside of the crossbar. Yet, Bayern found renewed energy following the introduction of Serge Gnabry, whose incisive run set the stage for Raphael Guerreiro’s equalizer against his former club.
Momentum shifted to Bayern as Gnabry dazzled with individual brilliance, beating two defenders to bend a superb effort past Gregor Kobel, completing a remarkable turnaround. However, Dortmund refused to surrender, equalizing again when Anton slotted home the rebound after Serhou Guirassy’s acrobatic attempt was parried.
Both teams had opportunities to seal victory in the final stages, with Pascal Gross lobbing agonizingly wide for Dortmund and Michael Olise squandering a chance to steal three points for Bayern. Despite the draw, Bayern maintained their six-point cushion at the top, with Bayer Leverkusen also dropping points in their draw against Union Berlin.
Both sides now shift focus to their Champions League quarter-final second legs, with Dortmund facing an uphill battle against Barcelona after a heavy 4-0 defeat, and Bayern traveling to Inter Milan trailing 2-1.
Manager Vincent Kompany will look to shore up Bayern’s defensive fragilities, while Dortmund’s Niko Kovac aims to rekindle their European campaign.
