The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Annita Annet Among, on Thursday morning officially flagged off St. Noa Girls Secondary School and St. Mary’s Kitende ahead of their participation in the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship in Accra, Ghana.
During a ceremony held at Parliament, the Speaker emphasized the importance of national representation and encouraged the teams to strive for excellence.
“As you go to Ghana, represent your country well,” Among said. “When you’re playing, play for me.”
Among also lauded the government’s continued investment in sports infrastructure and policy, highlighting its role in fostering a conducive environment for the growth of Ugandan sports.
“I thank the government of Uganda for the support in developing Ugandan sports through infrastructure, funds, conducive environment, and the sports act,” she noted.
In a gesture of support, the Speaker extended a $5,000 token of appreciation to each team.
“As we give you this, the only way to give us back is by making us proud,” she told the players.
The send-off was attended by key stakeholders in the education and sports sectors, including the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, Rev. Canon Dr. Duncans Mugumya; FUFA President and Member of Parliament Hon. Moses Magogo; USSSA President Justus Mugisha; USSSA 3rd Vice President M. Harriet Margaret Apolot; and USSSA CEO Christopher Mugisha.
The CAF Africa Schools Football Championship is set to take place from April 23 to 26 in Accra, Ghana, with Uganda participating in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
The tournament will feature eight teams in each division, with football legends Asamoah Gyan and Abedi Pele set to mentor the young athletes.
