The second edition of the Som Open Easter chess tournament was launched on Thursday at the Som offices in Makindye.
Over 150 participants from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and the USA confirmed their participation in the four-day tournament that starts this Friday till Monday at the Som offices in Makindye.
According to Robert Katende, the Som chess academy director, a Shs10m cash prize is at stake for respective winners.
“This edition is way better than what we had last year. This platform serves as a competitive event but also portrays Som Chess Academy’s commitment to nurture the generations using chess and to get good leaders from these almost forgotten communities,” noted Katende.
“The academy firmly believes in the transformative power of chess, providing young enthusiasts with access to life coaching education opportunities as we continue to restore hope and restore their lives to make them better citizens of Uganda,” he added.
This year’s edition has attracted star players Scott Low and Jason Shuster from the USA, who will give defending champion and Candidate Master Emmanuel Egesa a challenge in the Open category.
