KCCA Survive Kaaro Karungi Scare to Book Uganda Cup Semi Spot

KCCA advanced to the semi-finals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over FUFA Big League side Kaaro Karungi FC at Kyamate Stadium in Ntungamo on Saturday.

The quarter-final clash began with early intent from the visitors. Shafik Kwikiriza was a constant threat, nearly breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute with a low effort that missed the target by inches.

Just two minutes later, he delivered a teasing cross into the box that found Derrick Nsibambi, whose header crashed off the woodwork.

Kwikiriza again came close in the 19th minute with a powerful shot that forced a strong save from the Kaaro Karungi goalkeeper, leading to a corner.

KCCA’s efforts paid off in the 41st minute as a delivery from Joel Sserunjogi was inadvertently turned into his own net by a Kaaro Karungi defender, giving the visitors the lead.

There was a brief delay in restarting the second half due to a heavy downpour in Kyamate, but the hosts responded almost immediately when play resumed. Clinton Kamugisha levelled the score in the 48th minute, sending the home fans into celebration.

KCCA head coach Jackson Magera Kaddu introduced Emmanuel Anyama and Saidi Mayanja in the 55th minute, replacing Nsibambi and Mugume.

The change brought fresh energy, and four minutes later, Usama Arafat found the net with a composed left-footed finish to restore the visitors’ lead.

The Kampala side controlled much of the second half, but Kaaro Karungi remained dangerous. In the 85th minute, Kamugisha nearly drew level again, but KCCA goalkeeper Mugolofa produced a superb save to maintain the advantage.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of KCCA FC, who now move within three wins of lifting their 11th Uganda Cup title—what could be their only silverware of the season.

Youngster Brian Jjara, who featured in the squad for the high-stakes clash, was named Player of the Match for his standout performance.

The quarter-final was played over a single leg. In case of a tie, extra time and penalties were to be used, but KCCA ensured it didn’t come to that.
