St Lawrence University and Uganda Martyrs University face off in the final of the Pepsi University Football League on Friday April 25 at Wankulukuku, with both teams setting their sights on the coveted title.
St Lawrence head coach Davis Nnono says his team is more focused than ever and determined to end a ten-year wait for their first championship.
“We are focused as ever. We have had enough days to train and prepare, making sure that we are ready,” said Nnono. “Our target has remained the same since the first day. We want to win the trophy and we shall keep fighting to see that we achieve that.”
Nnono, whose side eliminated IUIU 2-1 on aggregate in the semifinals, acknowledged the high expectations but insisted that the team has earned its place in the final.
“We have always said that as a team this is the space that we want to find ourselves in – competing against the best,” he said. “For us to be in this position means we have been doing something well that deserves a reward – and that’s the title. Winning requires a lot, and we shall keep trying to do the right things till the final whistle.”
St Lawrence will be appearing in their third final in four seasons, and with the match being played in Wankulukuku – close to their Rubaga base – they hope to capitalize on home advantage.
Meanwhile, Uganda Martyrs University head coach Eric Kisuze believes his side is ready to reclaim glory.
“I am confident, by the special grace of God, that we will make it,” said Kisuze. “We started preparation very early and the boys are all in good condition. I believe we are bringing back the title to Nkozi.”
Uganda Martyrs, who eliminated Bugema University 2-0 on aggregate in the semis, have won two UFL titles in the past decade and are aiming to extend their record.
“Everyone will be fighting. Hopefully, our quality will bring us through,” Kisuze added.
The two teams have had tightly contested encounters in recent years. Their last three meetings in the league ended in draws in 2019 (1-1 and 2-2), while Uganda Martyrs edged St Lawrence 1-0 in 2022.
