Ankole Lions Make Coaching Change in Bid to Avoid Drop

Mbarara City have parted ways with head coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi following a disappointing run of form that has left the club hovering just above the Uganda Premier League relegation zone.

The club confirmed the decision on Sunday, ending Mbabazi’s tenure less than a year after his appointment on June 17, 2024.

He had signed a two-year contract to replace Waswa Bossa, but the team’s lack of progress and poor results prompted a mid-season managerial change.

Mbabazi leaves Mbarara City in 13th place with 23 points from 26 games—just three points clear of the relegation zone.

Under his management, the team registered only five wins, eight draws, and thirteen losses. They managed just 18 goals while conceding 31, averaging less than 0.7 goals scored and more than 1.1 goals conceded per match.

The Ankole Lions’ last victory on the pitch came on February 13, a narrow 1-0 away win over Mbale Heroes courtesy of a goal from Henry Kitegenyi.

Their most recent “home win” was a 3-0 result against KCCA, which was awarded by a FUFA decision, rather than earned on the field.

Mbarara City’s remaining fixtures offer a narrow path to survival. They face direct rivals Wakiso Giants away, before hosting Lugazi and Express, and then travel to face a strong Maroons side.

The club is expected to announce an interim technical team in the coming days as they seek an immediate response from the players and coaching staff. With relegation looming, the fight to retain top-flight status is set to go down to the wire.
