Uganda’s football pride soared high in the United States as Ibrahim Sekagya, Ibrahim Kasule, and Steven Sserwadda celebrated title glory with New York Red Bulls II, who clinched the MLS Next Pro Cup after a pulsating 4-3 shootout win over Colorado Rapids 2 on Sunday.
It was a night of drama, determination, and pure football spirit.
Sekagya’s young Red Bulls side looked dead and buried at halftime after falling 2-0 behind, courtesy of strikes from Billio Diop and James Cameron.
But true to Sekagya’s fighting DNA, the Red Bulls roared back in the second half.
Rafael Mosquera pulled one back just past the hour mark, before Roald Mitchell restored hope with a smart finish to make it 2-2.
The game turned into a rollercoaster when Antony Garcia put the Rapids back in front in the 78th minute, but the never-say-die Red Bulls refused to quit.
Moments later, Mosquera held his nerve from the spot to level again at 3-3, sending the tie into a nerve-wracking shootout.
In the end, New York Red Bulls II held their composure from 12 yards to win 4-3 on penalties, lifting their first-ever MLS Next Pro Cup, and etching a new chapter in the club’s history.
For Uganda, it was a moment of pride as coach Sekagya, a former Cranes captain, guided his side to glory, while Kasule and Sserwadda added their first silverware in American football.
From Kampala’s dusty pitches to America’s grand stage, the Ugandan trio have shown the world that talent, grit, and belief can take you all the way to the top.
