NBL: Oilers, Lady Canons Stay Perfect as Flames and Angels’ Struggles Continue in Eventful Weekend

City Oilers and UCU Lady Canons maintained their flawless start to the 2026 National Basketball League season, while UMU Flames and Angels continued to struggle as a busy weekend of action unfolded across Lugogo Indoor Arena and UCU Mukono, with four headline clashes broadcast live on NBS Sport.

Friday Live action at Lugogo delivered major statements as UCU Lady Canons dominated Pearl Queens 57-40, while Oilers edged Sommet BC 66-60 in a hard fought encounter.

In the latter game, Landry Ndikumana opened the contest for the Oilers with an early three pointer before Joseph Chuma responded for Sommet as the opening quarter ended level at 15-15 following Isaac Athuai’s fadeaway layup.

City Oilers then tightened their grip in the second quarter through improved ball movement and shot selection, creating better scoring opportunities while stretching Sommet’s defense to open a four point lead at halftime.

Ndikumana ignited the crowd early in the third quarter with another shot from downtown as the ten-time champions pushed their advantage to nine points heading into the final period.

Sommet attempted a late comeback but the Oilers held firm to seal a six point victory.

Peter Cheng of Sommet produced a double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Joseph Chuma added 11 points. Ndikumana and Titus Lual each scored 14 points for the Oilers while Fayed Baale contributed 11.

Earlier in the evening, UCU Lady Canons continued their dominant run with a commanding 57-40 victory over Pearl Queens.

The game began evenly with Racheal Nanyonga tying the contest 8-8 late in the opening quarter, but UCU gradually took control as their defense restricted the Queens to eight points in the second period to build a nine point halftime lead.

Mariam Namukwaya of the Lady Canons sparked the second half with a three pointer before her side steadily pulled away to secure a comfortable 17 point win.

Matrina Anyango led the scoring for UCU Lady Canons with 12 points, while Sylvia Nakituuka and Sylvia Nantongo each added 10. Jane Chisom stood out for Pearl Queens with a game-high 18 points.

The National Basketball League then shifted to UCU Mukono on Saturday, and all the five fixtures lived up to the billing.

JKL Lady Dolphins dismantled Angels 88-38 with Brenda Ekon delivering the most explosive scoring display of the season so far, pouring in a whooping 32 points.

KCCA Leopards then strengthened their hold at the top of the women’s standings with a convincing 66-44 victory over UPDF Lady Tomahawks before defending women’s champions JT Lady Jaguars cruised past Nabisunsa Girls 86-41.

In the men’s division, JKL Dolphins secured a narrow 53-49 win over UMU Flames, extending the newcomers’ difficult start to six consecutive defeats since their promotion.

UCU Canons also enjoyed success on home court, edging Victoria Crocs 70-62 in a closely contested battle.

Action then returned to Lugogo on Sunday with five more games including two that were broadcast live on NBS Sport.

Pearl Queens bounced back strongly from their Friday loss to defeat Angels 70-39 while UCU Lady Canons continued their perfect start with a 54-36 victory over Miracle Eaglets, condemning the Eaglets to their sixth loss in eight games.

City Oilers remained unstoppable in the afternoon, defeating KCCA Panthers 71-60 to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Fayed Baale led the charge with 18 points as the record champions strengthened their early title credentials.

Sommet BC also recovered from their Friday defeat by edging JT Jaguars 74-72 in a tense live contest that nearly went to overtime.

Peter Cheng starred again for Sommet with 23 points while George Christian Odeke matched the tally for the Jaguars. Cheng and Chuol Dut each grabbed 10 rebounds in a fiercely contested matchup.

The final game of the weekend saw defending men’s champions Namuwongo Blazers defeat Victoria Crocs 69-51, in a clash that was live on NBS Sport.

Peter Obleng delivered a standout performance with 25 points including five three pointers whilst also collecting 12 rebounds, while Victoria Crocs forward Chuol Nyuot impressed despite the loss with a double double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

After the weekend results, Sommet BC sit top of the men’s standings with 14 points from nine games while City Oilers remain the only unbeaten team after five matches, and UMU Flames are rooted to the bottom without a win after six games.

In the women’s league, KCCA Leopards lead the standings with seven wins from nine matches while UCU Lady Canons are the only unbeaten side with seven victories from seven games.

Angels, on the other hand, continue to struggle at the foot of the table after seven straight defeats.

The National Basketball League resumes on Wednesday with six fixtures scheduled across Lugogo Indoor Arena, YMCA Wandegeya and the Jaguars Den in Kira before action returns to Lugogo on Friday, continues at ABJA Park on Saturday and concludes again at Lugogo on Sunday.
