Nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda, the Kigezi region is renowned for its rolling hills, terraced landscapes, cool climate, and rich cultural heritage. Often called the “Switzerland of Africa,” it comprises the districts of Kabale, Kisoro, Rubanda, Rukiga, Kanungu, and Rukungiri.
For decades, Kigezi has produced gifted athletes and passionate football fans, but one element was missing from its sporting identity — a representative in Uganda’s top-flight football league.
That long wait is finally over.
After earning promotion from the FUFA Big League, Kigezi HomeBoyz FC will compete in the Uganda Premier League next season, becoming the first club from the region to reach the top tier in 25 years.
The last team from Kigezi to feature among Uganda’s football elite was Horizon FC, whose top-flight journey ended at the turn of the century. Since then, fans have traveled long distances or supported clubs from other regions while dreaming of elite football returning home. That dream is now reality.
The promotion of Kigezi HomeBoyz is more than a football triumph — it is a victory for an entire region that has waited patiently for a seat at Uganda’s biggest football table. From the hills of Kabale to the border communities of Kisoro, supporters are united in celebration.
The club’s rise has been fueled by community support, committed sponsors, determined players, and a technical team that believed promotion was possible. Their success ensures Uganda Premier League clubs will journey to Kabale next season, bringing national attention and economic activity to the region. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and local businesses are expected to benefit from the influx of visiting teams, officials, and supporters.
For young footballers growing up in Kigezi, the club’s promotion also provides something equally important — belief. For the first time in a generation, aspiring players can dream of playing top-flight football without leaving their region.
While Kigezi HomeBoyz face a daunting challenge in their debut Premier League campaign, their promotion has already secured a place in history. Twenty-five years after Horizon FC last carried the region’s flag in Uganda’s top division, Kigezi football is back where many believe it belongs.
And as the rest of the Uganda Premier League prepares for trips into the famous Kigezi hills, a proud region is ready to welcome elite football home once again.
