Nile Relegated as SKLPS Promotion Hopes End in Dramatic CU Men’s 50-Over League Round

The Cricket Uganda Men’s 50-Over League produced major shifts in both the promotion and relegation battles on Day 15, with Nile CC officially relegated to Division Three, SKLPS CC seeing their hopes of promotion extinguished, and Rounders CC slipping deeper into danger in the Gold Category.

The most painful outcome of the weekend belonged to Nile CC, whose seven-wicket defeat to Soroti City CC sealed their fate. Batting first at Lugogo Cricket Oval, Nile struggled throughout their innings and could only muster 96/9, with captain Lennon Kangume’s 19 runs the highest contribution in a disappointing display.

Soroti City’s bowlers controlled proceedings, led by Hillary Kuteesa’s three-wicket haul. Chasing a modest target of 97, Soroti made light work of the task as Juma Sururu blasted 47 off 37 deliveries to guide his side to 99/3 in just 15.4 overs. Although the defeat alone did not mathematically relegate Nile, Kutchi Tigers B’s victory over SKLPS the following day confirmed both Nile and St John’s SS Mukono would be dropping to Division Three.

The result at Entebbe Cricket Ground also ended SKLPS CC’s push for promotion. Kutchi Tigers B, fighting for survival themselves, posted only 89 after being bowled out in 31 overs. Dinesh Manji Vekariya starred with the ball for SKLPS, claiming five wickets in an outstanding spell.

However, SKLPS failed to capitalise. Their batting line-up collapsed under pressure and they were dismissed for just 57 in 23 overs, handing Kutchi Tigers B a 32-run victory. Hitesh Bhudiya led the damage with three wickets as Kutchi secured their status while condemning SKLPS to another season outside Division One.

In the Gold Category, Rounders CC endured a damaging defeat that pushed them into the relegation zone. Ceylon Lions piled up an imposing 306 all out in 48.2 overs at Serenity Group Cricket Ground, powered by a destructive century from Perry Wazombe, who hammered 104 from only 58 balls. Hamza Khan added 55 while Jonathan Kiiza contributed 37.

Rounders fought back through Calvin Watuwa’s 83 and Oscar Manishimwe’s 75, but the chase ultimately fell short. Wazombe completed a memorable all-round performance by taking four wickets as Rounders were bowled out for 241, leaving them facing a tense battle to preserve their Gold Category status.

Elsewhere in the top tier, JACC secured a hard-earned four-wicket victory over Kutchi Tigers CC at Jinja SSS Cricket Ground. Kutchi Tigers posted 178 after Cyrus Kakuru scored 54 and Mitul Pindoriya remained unbeaten on 50. JACC’s bowling attack shared the wickets, with Yunus Sowobi taking three while Ivan Baidhu, Sadam Oyaga and Jonathan Nyiiro each claimed two.

The chase began disastrously for JACC as they slipped to 0/2, but captain Kenneth Waiswa steadied the innings with a composed unbeaten 66 from 111 balls. Support from Jonathan Nyiiro and Sadam Oyaga helped guide the side to 181/6 and an important victory.

In the Bronze Category, Kifaru CC delivered one of the most complete performances of the round, defeating Chennai CC by 79 runs. Half-centuries from Hiral Patel and Farid Dinani helped Kifaru reach 238/9 before Devansh Patel and Thummaluru Veera Sagar Reddy claimed three wickets apiece to bowl Chennai out for 159.

Meanwhile, Pak Shaheens CC were awarded victory after Iganga CC forfeited their fixture following a protest over an umpiring decision. The outcome strengthened Pak Shaheens’ grip on top spot in Bronze Group B as the playoffs draw nearer.

With only a handful of matches remaining, the league’s decisive phase is taking shape. Nile’s relegation has now been confirmed, SKLPS have been left to reflect on a missed promotion opportunity, and Rounders face an increasingly difficult fight for survival, while JACC, Soroti City and Pak Shaheens continue to build momentum at the business end of the season.
