After years of perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering belief, Kataka Football Club has finally achieved its long-awaited dream of playing in Uganda’s top-flight football league.
The Mbale-based team began its journey in 1999, formed by 40 village boys who played at the current Mbale Secondary School grounds. Covered in soil and dust, the pitch inspired the name “Kataka,” a local word meaning “soil.” What started as leisure football soon grew into something greater.
Driven by passion and a desire to compete, the young footballers approached Mafuko Latif, now the club president, for support in registering the team. Reflecting on that moment, Mafuko recalls:
“In 2000, when I was leading Mbale Heroes, a group of boys came to me seeking support to register their team. I accepted their request, and that marked the beginning of Kataka Football Club,” says Mafuko Latif, President of Kataka.
Under his leadership, Kataka embarked on a challenging journey, rising through every level of Ugandan football: starting in the District Zonal League (5th Division), progressing to the Provincial League (4th Division), advancing to the Regional League (3rd Division), and eventually earning a place in the FUFA Big League.
For 15 seasons, Kataka fought tirelessly in the second tier, enduring heartbreaks, near misses, and countless challenges. Yet the club never abandoned its dream of reaching the Uganda Premier League.
Today, that dream is reality. The promotion is not only a victory for the club but also a triumph for the people of Mbale and Eastern Uganda, who have stood by the team throughout its journey. It is a testament to patience, commitment, and community support.
As they prepare for their maiden campaign in the Uganda Premier League, Kataka has promised to be more than just participants. The leadership has vowed to build a competitive team capable of challenging the country’s best sides and establishing itself as a force in Ugandan football.
