Erling Haaland marked his FIFA World Cup debut in spectacular fashion, scoring twice as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 in Group I to record their biggest-ever victory at the tournament.
After a 28-year absence from football’s greatest stage, Norway returned with a statement performance, led by their superstar striker who showed exactly why he is considered one of the world’s most feared goalscorers.
The match burst into life from the opening minutes, with both teams playing an attacking brand of football in an entertaining first half.
Norway eventually broke the deadlock in the 28th minute following a beautifully constructed team move. David Møller Wolfe delivered a pinpoint low cross into the box, and Haaland was perfectly positioned at the back post to tap home his first-ever World Cup goal.
However, Iraq refused to be overwhelmed and responded with impressive character.
Just 10 minutes later, they found an equaliser through Aymen Hussein. Amir Al-Ammari created the opening with a superb run down the left before delivering an excellent cross, allowing Hussein to power a header into the bottom corner and ignite hopes of a historic result.
The momentum appeared to be shifting, but Iraq’s own mistake handed Norway the advantage before half-time.
A routine backpass from Zaid Tahseen turned into a nightmare when goalkeeper Jalal Hassan hesitated on the ball, allowing Haaland to close him down and block the attempted clearance into the net.
Despite trailing at the break, Iraq ended the first half strongly and almost levelled again. Ali Al-Hamadi and Ibrahim Bayesh were denied by crucial Norwegian defending, while Akam Hashim narrowly missed with a powerful volley just before the interval.
The second half was a much calmer affair, with both teams struggling to create clear chances as Norway looked to manage their advantage.
Iraq continued to compete bravely, but Norway eventually found the decisive moment in the 76th minute.
Substitute Leo Østigård rose highest from Martin Ødegaard’s corner and guided a header into the net to secure victory for Norway on their long-awaited return to the World Cup.
The result was sealed further in stoppage time when an unfortunate own goal involving Aymen Hussein added to Iraq’s frustration after a spirited display.
For Norway, the victory represents a dream return to the World Cup and their largest-ever win in the competition. Haaland’s brace also confirmed that the Manchester City striker is ready to make his mark on the global stage.
For Iraq, the defeat extends their wait for a first-ever World Cup victory, but their performance showed they can compete with established teams.
Norway will next face Senegal on Tuesday at 3 am, while Iraq face a difficult challenge against defending champions France at midnight on the same day.
