Kyoga Avengers suffered their first defeat of the 2026 Great Lakes Men’s T20 tournament after a disciplined Bunyonyi Warriors performance secured a 35-run victory at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Wednesday.
The result brought an end to Kyoga’s unbeaten run and gave Bunyonyi only their second win of the competition, while the Avengers remained top of the standings despite the setback.
Bunyonyi Warriors were forced to rebuild early after Robinson Obuya fell from the very first ball of the innings. Joseph Baguma led the recovery with a brisk 36 off 21 deliveries, while Anas Baig contributed 19. Abu Seguya and Mulongo Paul chipped in with 17 runs each as Bunyonyi posted 136 all out in 18.4 overs.
Kyoga’s bowlers shared the workload effectively. Ivan Baidhu and Dan Keith Amani claimed three wickets apiece, while Munir Ismail added two wickets to keep the Warriors in check.
In pursuit of 137, Kyoga made a promising start through Conrad Lubwama and Ronald Lutaaya, who scored 22 and 21 respectively. However, the innings lost momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Gerald Olipa contributed 18 runs and captain Juma Miyaji made 20, but neither batter was able to establish the substantial partnership needed to anchor the chase.
The turning point came through an outstanding spell from Kassim Adam. The Bunyonyi seamer tore through the Kyoga batting line-up, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 14 from his four overs. Anas Baig provided strong support with three wickets as the tournament leaders were dismissed for 101 in 16.1 overs.
Adam’s match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award and ensured Bunyonyi completed one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.
Despite the defeat, Kyoga Avengers remain at the top of the standings with 10 points and will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they face Mburo Blasters on Thursday. For Bunyonyi Warriors, the victory keeps their campaign alive and provides fresh momentum heading into their next fixture against Victoria Strikers.
