Kyoga Avengers Stay Perfect as Wabwose Powers Mburo Blasters Revival at Great Lakes T20

The Kyoga Avengers strengthened their grip on top spot in the Great Lakes Men’s T20 tournament while Steven Wabwose inspired Mburo Blasters to a crucial victory during an entertaining fifth day of action at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on Tuesday.

Two high-scoring contests produced plenty of fireworks as Mburo edged Bunyonyi Warriors by 20 runs in the morning before Kyoga Avengers continued their unbeaten run with a commanding 34-run win over Victoria Strikers.

The day’s opening match belonged to Wabwose, whose all-round display helped Mburo Blasters defend a daunting total of 197.

Mburo’s innings was built on aggressive batting throughout the order. Charles Musemeza blasted 37 off 21 balls to provide an early platform before Fahad Mutagana smashed a rapid 26 from just seven deliveries. Captain Riazat Ali Shah then unleashed a stunning cameo of 33 off 10 balls, clearing the boundary five times as the Blasters surged towards the 200-run mark.

Yashashvi Joshi and David Wabwire both contributed 29 runs, while Wabwose chipped in with 12 as Mburo were eventually bowled out for 197 in 19.5 overs.

Bunyonyi Warriors refused to back down in the chase and looked well placed thanks to a superb opening partnership between Robinson Obuya and Anas Baig. Obuya struck 64 from 42 deliveries while Baig hammered 62 off only 30 balls, keeping their side firmly in contention.

However, once the opening stand was broken, Mburo regained control. Wabwose produced the decisive spell, claiming three wickets to derail the chase, while Hamid Munigwa picked up two wickets and Ali Shah added another crucial breakthrough.

Despite a spirited effort, Bunyonyi finished on 177 for seven, 20 runs short of their target. Wabwose’s influential contribution with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match award.

The afternoon fixture saw tournament leaders Kyoga Avengers continue their impressive form with another convincing performance against Victoria Strikers.

Gerald Olipa once again led the charge, blasting 54 off just 24 balls and striking six sixes as Kyoga posted a competitive 181 for six. Cyrus Kakuru anchored the innings with a composed half-century, making 50 from 36 deliveries, while Conrad Lubwama added 29 and Juma Miyaji chipped in with 24.

Victoria’s bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs, although Baidhu Ivan produced a bright individual performance with three wickets.

Chasing 182, Victoria Strikers never managed to build sustained momentum. Robert Ajuna top-scored with 44 from 33 balls, Jonathan Kiiza struck 29 from 16 deliveries and Theoneste Hakuziyaremye remained unbeaten on 25.

Kyoga’s bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals to prevent any serious challenge, restricting Victoria to 147 for eight from their 20 overs. Olipa capped another outstanding all-round performance by contributing with the ball and was named Player of the Match.

The results leave Kyoga Avengers firmly on top of the standings with a maximum 10 points from five matches. Mburo Blasters strengthened their hold on second place with six points, while Victoria Strikers and Bunyonyi Warriors remain tied on two points each.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s fixtures, with Victoria Strikers facing Mburo Blasters in the morning before Bunyonyi Warriors attempt to halt Kyoga Avengers’ relentless march later in the afternoon. As the tournament enters its closing stages, Kyoga continue to set the pace while the battle for the remaining positions remains wide open.
