Former Uganda Cranes captain and veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has hailed businessman Hamis Kigundu for his dedication to nurturing football talent in Uganda through the ongoing Hamz Tournament.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star described the competition as a vital platform enabling young players to showcase their skills and gain exposure, which he emphasized is crucial for the growth of the sport in the country.
During his second visit to the tournament venue, Onyango commended Kigundu’s investment in grassroots football, noting that initiatives like the Hamz Tournament create pathways for emerging talent to develop and pursue professional careers.
“This tournament is a great initiative for young footballers because it gives them an opportunity to display their talent and grow their careers. We need more competitions like this to support football development in Uganda,” Onyango said.
He further encouraged Ugandans to embrace night football, highlighting its convenience for both players and fans. According to him, evening matches allow supporters to enjoy games after completing their daily work, boosting attendance and strengthening football culture.
Night football has become one of the unique attractions of the Hamz Tournament, drawing large crowds and creating an electrifying atmosphere for players and spectators alike.
The tournament continues to earn praise from stakeholders who view it as a key avenue for nurturing talent and advancing football development across Uganda.
Over 30 teams are competing in the 2026 Hamz Tournament, with a cash prize of 100 million shillings set aside for the top eight teams.
