Crystal Palace are in freefall, and manager Oliver Glasner is on the brink after a disastrous start to the Premier League season.
With just three points from eight games, the Eagles are staring down the barrel of relegation, prompting speculation about Glasner’s future.
The Austrian boss, who enjoyed a strong finish to the previous campaign, has overseen a dismal run that has seen Palace score a mere five goals.
Their only saving grace is the even worse form of Wolves and Southampton, who prop them up in the table.
The Guardian reports that Glasner has just four games to turn things around before the next international break.
These matches include a home clash against Tottenham, followed by an away trip to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup and another away game against Wolves in the league. They then host Fulham at Selhurst Park.
If Glasner fails to secure some wins, he could be out of a job, with a surprising name emerging as a potential replacement: Gareth Southgate.
Southgate, the former England manager, has a deep connection with Crystal Palace.
He began his professional career with the Eagles in 1990, making nearly 200 appearances and even captaining the club at a young age.
A fan favorite, he transitioned from midfield to central defense during his time at Palace.
However, Southgate recently stated that he has no intention of returning to coaching soon after leaving the England job this summer. Despite the emotional pull of Palace, he seems focused on taking a break.
Crystal Palace are not putting all their eggs in one basket. Other managers linked to the role include Graham Potter, who is currently out of work after leaving Chelsea in April 2023, and David Moyes, who left West Ham at the end of last season.
Glasner’s potential departure would be a significant fall from grace, especially considering his impressive start at Palace and the reported interest from Bayern Munich over the summer.
Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness revealed that the club wanted Glasner for their managerial role, eventually filled by Vincent Kompany, but Palace refused to release him.
