Shilla Omuriwe Buyungo has made history as the first Ugandan to be appointed an FIVB Volleyball Instructor, a prestigious role that places her among the elite educators in the sport globally.
This landmark achievement highlights her extraordinary contributions to volleyball as a player, coach, and now a global mentor.
Born on July 17, 1977, Shilla has been a trailblazer throughout her career. In 2021, she became the first female Head Coach of the Uganda Volleyball Cranes, Uganda’s men’s national volleyball team.
She was also the first woman to coach at the African Club Championship in 2015 in Tunisia. Her extensive coaching experience includes leading teams such as Air Force (UPDF) Men, KAVC, and KCCA Men, and she is currently the Head Coach of the KCCA Ladies Team.
As an FIVB Volleyball Instructor, Shilla will be responsible for conducting FIVB-approved training programs to educate and certify coaches worldwide.
This involves teaching advanced techniques, sharing the latest trends in volleyball, and promoting global standards to elevate the sport’s quality.
Her duties will also include mentoring coaches and supporting grassroots development initiatives to expand the sport’s reach in underrepresented regions.
Shilla’s elevation to this role is not just a personal achievement but also a significant step for African volleyball. It paves the way for more representation and showcases the potential of African talent on the global stage.
